In contiguous operations, each commander directs and sustains combat power toward enemy forces in concert with adjacent units. These operations are linear and are the conduct of operations with identified forward lines of own troops (FLOTs). In these operations, emphasis is placed on maintaining the position of friendly forces in relation to other friendly forces. From this relative positioning of forces security is enhanced and massing of forces can be facilitated.  Contiguous operations are normally depicted by sustained offensive and defensive operations against powerful, echeloned, and symmetrically organized enemy forces.  Units are arrayed in echeloned formations in a linear fashion where unit boundaries are adjoined with no gaps or uncontrolled space between unit formations. This creates a contiguous area and a continuous forward line of troops that focuses combat power on the enemy and protects sustainment functions operating behind the forward line of troops.

In the graphic depicted the upper half shows how Army forces, to include the sustainment organizations, would be arrayed on a contiguous, linear battlefield.  For clarity, the lower half of the graphic shows the types of sustainment units that would be doctrinally located at each echelon.

In non-contiguous operations, forces orient on objectives without geographic reference to adjacent forces. This creates nonlinear operations that typically focus on creating specific effects on multiple decisive points. Nonlinear operations emphasize simultaneous operations along multiple line of operation from selected bases.  Non-contiguous operations are normally depicted by sustained offensive and defensive operations against powerful but asymmetrically organized forces that have the capability to attack from multiple directions
simultaneously.  Units are arrayed in separated areas of operations (AO) where the commander assigned the AO has responsibility to control the space occupied by his unit.  The senior Army headquarters or Joint Force Commander retains responsibility for the space between the AOs that is either uncontrolled by or under limited control of subordinate commanders.

These operations are linear and are the conduct of operations with identified forward lines of own troops (FLOTs). In these operations, emphasis is placed on maintaining the position of friendly forces in relation to other friendly forces. In the graphic depicted the upper half shows how Army forces, to include the sustainment organizations, would be arrayed on a contiguous, linear battlefield.  For clarity, the lower half of the graphic shows the types of sustainment units that would be doctrinally located at each echelon.

In the graphic depicted the upper half shows how Army forces, to include the sustainment organizations, would be arrayed on a non-contiguous, non-linear battlefield.  For clarity, the lower half of the graphic shows the types of sustainment units that would be doctrinally located at each echelon.
