Combat Sustainment Support Battalion (CSSB)

CSSB SharePoint Lessons Learned and Quality Assurance Page

Click Here to acccess the SharePoint Lessons Learned and Quality Assurance Page for the Combat Sustainment Support Battalion.

In unified land operations, sustainment units build and maintain combat power. Building and maintaining combat power throughout an operation is essential to success. The role of the CSSB is to provide logistics support on an area basis to Army forces at EAB, or if required by its higher headquarters, to joint and multifunctional forces. This includes providing support to brigade combat teams, (BCT’s) operating within the CSSB Area.

The reality of today’s modular designed Army depends on the BCT’s ability to receive support from EAB. With regards to sustainment units, this includes the CSSB. Training in the Decisive Action Training Environment (DATE) rotation at a Maneuver Combat Training Center (M-CTC) requires the BCT and its Maneuver Task Forces (MTF’s) to receive sustainment from organic units (BSB’s and FSC’s) as well as EAB units such as the CSSB within the 14 day training rotation.

This portal contains Observations, Insights and Best Practices from CSSB’s that have provided sustainment to BCT’s while undergoing training at the M-CTC’s.

The sustainment brigade (SB) is a flexible, modular headquarters organization capable of conducting multiple missions, and is a key organization in linking sustainment support from the operational to tactical levels. The sustainment brigade is a fixed headquarters organization comprised of a command group, staff and special troops battalion. The support capability of the sustainment brigade comes from the attachment of various organizations based on the specific mission. The sustainment brigade provides mission command of all assigned and attached organizations to provide replenishment to maneuver brigades.

SB’s in CTC Rotations; The current Army plan deploys portions of the SB HQ element set up “live” at the Maneuver CTC’s in order to provide C2 between the CSSB and BSB in the Training Area, aka; “the box” supporting the BCT. This SB HQ detachment is not provided Observer, Coach/Trainer (OC/T) coverage and is not instrumented. The SB Detachment must remain outside the box.

The Reverse Collection and Analysis Team (R-CAAT) program pairs CASCOM doctrine and training developers (generating force) with leaders from redeployed combat service support units (operating force) to bridge the informational gap by bringing in redeployed commanders and some of their direct support staff to Fort Lee. Over a two or three-day period, they describe their observations, insights and lessons to the schoolhouse through professional development and directorate roundtable sessions. The staff members of the individual directorates engage the R-CAAT teams in-depth, conducting discussions with the command teams on concepts, training, doctrine, tactics, and unit design.
